Effect of the Use of Natural Products, Biodiversity, AI, and Digital Innovations in Agricultural Improvement in Southeast, Nigeria

This study explored how natural products, biodiversity, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital innovations can enhance agriculture in Southeast Nigeria. It identified available natural products for crop production and examined their impact on agricultural progress and sustainability. The research also assessed AI tools and digital innovations in farming, analyzing their effects on crop management and accessibility to agricultural information, while addressing challenges in implementing these technologies. Conducted with 450 respondents through structured questionnaires, the study indicated that farmers utilized resources like animal manure, compost, and neem extract, which support soil fertility, boost crop yields, reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers, and enhance environmental quality. The study indicates that mixed cropping, agroforestry, local crop varieties, legumes, natural pollinators, organic matter, and livestock are key components of biodiversity in farming. This diversity enhances soil fertility, boosts crop yields, protects local species, controls pests naturally, and fosters climate resilience. Additionally, mobile applications, weather forecasts, pest control apps, GPS, GIS technologies, drones, smart farming tools, and irrigation systems constitute the digital innovations in agriculture. These tools aid in increasing crop production and optimizing farm management, improving access to agricultural information, and enhancing decision-making. However, challenges persist, including limited technical knowledge, subpar extension services, financial constraints, high technology costs, inadequate infrastructure, and a lack of policy support. The study suggests that integrating biodiversity and digital innovations can enhance agricultural production and food security in Southeast Nigeria. Recommendations include promoting farmer training, improving extension services, developing strong digital infrastructure, offering financing for advanced technologies, and fostering collaborations among government, researchers, industry, and farmers for sustainable agricultural growth.
